Deonarine, Chattergoon hit half-centuries but Guyana all out for 222

KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) - Narsingh Deonarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon hit half-centuries, but Guyana face a big challenge to gain first innings points after they were dismissed by Jamaica on the opening day of their second round match in the Carib Beer 2004 Cricket Series yesterday.
When stumps were drawn at Sabina Park, Jamaica were four without loss, in reply to Guyana’s first innings total of 222 in which Deonarine top-scored with 69 and Chattergoon supported with 68.
All-rounder Dave Bernard Jr, who played a few Tests and One-day Internationals last year for West Indies, was the most successful Jamaica bowler with three wickets for 41 runs from 14 overs. Spin bowlers Ryan Cunningham and Gareth Breese took two wickets apiece.
Left-handers Azeemul Haniff and Chattergoon were the openers that got things on the way for the visitors, but when the former lost his off-stump to Andrew Richardson, and Krishna Arjune was lbw to Bernard, Jamaica were on top with Guyana 34 for two.
Lennox Cush joined Chattergoon, but before he was fully settled, he got a beauty from Bernard that extracted his stumps to leave the visitors 49 for three at this stage and regretting their decision to bat.
Chattergoon and Deonarine, however, frustrated the Jamaican bowling to add 103 for the fourth wicket.
The two, despite being missed by shoddy fielders, batted with a lot of determination and took their team out of trouble. The Jamaicans only had themselves to blame -- both batsmen were let off twice.
Chattergoon on 51 was the first beneficiary of Perry’s mistake. Standing at first slip, the Jamaican could not hold on to a straightforward catch off Bernard.
The frustrations for the home team continued. Again Perry was the fielder, Bernard the bowler and Deonarine the batsman. By this time, Perry was moved to backward point, but it was the same thing at a different position, this time diving to his left and failing to hold what would have been a very good catch to dismiss Deonarine.
With both batsmen living to fight another day, Chattergoon again benefited from another Jamaican mistake. This time, it was the bowler Bernard, who bowled the Guyanese with a no-ball.
This time Chattergoon did not live to fight for long as Perry had him caught behind minutes before tea.
After the tea interval, Jamaica enjoyed success as Guyana lost their last six wickets for 70 runs.
Travis Dowlin, who resumed with Deonarine after the interval, did not last long, as he was caught behind off Cunningham, and Deonarine fell to a brilliant backward point catch to Bernard off Cunningham.
