KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) - Tamar Lambert and David Bernard Jnr completed half-centuries for Jamaica to capture first innings honours against Guyana in their second round match of the Carib Beer 2004 Cricket Series Sabina Park.

At the close on the second day, Guyana were 14 for one, after Jamaica were dismissed for 270, replying to the visitors’ first innings total of 222.

Lambert top-scored for Jamaica with 55 and Bernard complemented with 51. As expected, Neil McGarrell with four for 45 and Mahendra Nagamootoo with four for 70 were the principal Guyana bowlers.

Jamaica resumed their innings on four without loss, however, with 20 runs on

the board, Keith Hibbert fell, caught behind off Ryan Thomas.

Fortune favoured Jamaica and deserted Guyana when Donovon Pagon was put down on zero and again on 20 in the slips off Griffith.

Guyana did not live to regret it though, Pagon being caught behind off leg-spin bowler Nagamootoo for 24 to leave Jamaicans at 57 for two.

The home team found themselves fighting at 80 for three, when opener Brenton Parchment was caught at mid-off off Nagamootoo for 41.

Parchment’s dismissal led to a 97-run fourth wicket stand between Lambert and Bernard that laid the platform for the home team to overtake the Guyanese.

The two batsmen took things into their own hands from the 18th over and despite

Nagamootoo and McGarrell wheeling away from both ends, Lambert in his second match for Jamaica, and Bernard, who played Test cricket for West Indies last year, were not troubled.

In what could be considered as a session won by Guyana, the pair of Lambert and Bernard took Jamaica to the lunch break at 115 for three.

Just when the partnership looked to blossom after the interval, Lambert was caught behind off McGarrell to leave Jamaica 177 for four. Lambert hit five fours and a six from 116 deliveries in 112 minutes.

Eight overs later, Bernard was caught at first slip off McGarrell after hitting six fours from 128 balls, and then Mario Ventura was bowled by the Guyana captain as Jamaica slipped to 197 for six.

It took a gutsy innings of 33 from Nehemiah Perry to get the Jamaicans over the hump. The long-standing off-spin bowler batted with a runner and was last man out after he edged Nagamootoo past the right hand of McGarrell at first slip to the boundary to see the home team past Guyana’s total.

After finding themselves behind by 48 runs, Guyana were rocked by a sensational gully catch by Parchment to dismiss left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon, who attempted to square-drive Bernard.
