PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) - Trinidad and Tobago, led by half-centuries from opener Tishan Maraj and middle-order batsman Aneil Kanhai completed a fine seven-wicket victory over West Indies-B on the final day of their second round Carib Beer Series encounter at the National Cricket Centre, yesterday.

Set a victory target of 136 runs, Trinidad and Tobago coasted to victory at 138 for three, as Maraj (68 not out) and Kanhai (53) figured in an enterprising third-wicket partnership of 103 in 90 minutes.

T&T claimed maximum 12 points and climbed to second place in the standings on 18 points, trailing leaders Barbados (24).

Jamaica are lying third on 15 points, followed by West Indies-B (12), Leewards (9), Kenya (7), and Guyana bottom of the standings without a point.

Maraj and Kanhai came together with T&T in a spot of bother on 22 for two with rain threatening, but they impressively rallied the home side to secure victory just after the tea interval.

Earlier, Windies-B with their backs to the wall at 186 for seven -- an overall lead of 65 -- staged stubborn resistance and added 70 runs for their remaining three wickets.

They were finally dismissed just before lunch for 256, with good contributions from lower-order batsmen, Kenroy Williams (27), Anderson Sealy(21) and Jason Bennett (17).

Spinner Amit Jaggernauth ended with his best first-class figures of five for 63 from 30 overs.

T&T went to lunch without a run on the board and on resumption, lost skipper Imran Jan (10) well caught at slip by Jason Haynes from pacer Bennett's bowling with the score on 15.

Seven runs later, first innings hero Dwayne Bravo, promoted to number three, was caught by wicketkeeper Dinesh Ramdin off pacer Dwight Washington for two.

But the dependable Maraj and Kanhai played responsibly, mixing defence with aggression and they gradually took command.

T&T went to tea on 118 for two a mere 18 runs for victory with Kanhai on 53 and Maraj 50.

After the break and with the addition of seven runs, Kanhai was caught at slip by Haynes off Washington's bowling without adding to his teatime score.

The burly left-handed batsman batted for 90 minutes and 55 balls and struck four fours and one six.

Maraj, who will be leaving on Sunday with the West Indies Under-19 team for the Youth World Cup in Bangladesh ended the match in style -- a classic on-drive to the mid-on boundary off Washington for four.

It was T&T's second consecutive victory against the opposition having beaten them at the same venue last year.

Maraj’s unbeaten 68 was his personal best in the regional four-day championships, surpassing his previous highest score of 61 made last week against the Leeward Islands at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre. He batted for 153 minutes, faced 82 balls and struck six fours.

Captain Jan said that the contributions of Bravo with the bat and Jaggernauth with the ball set up the victory.

"Bravo's 197 put our team on top after our poor start. It was a gutsy and determined effort by the youngster, who has a promising international career,” Jan said.

T&T took control of the game when they scored 356 in response to the B-team ’s 238, before Jaggernauth’s five-wicket haul reduced them to 238 all out.

“Jaggernauth's bowling was a revelation. He stuck to his task admirably and it paid rich dividends. They were well supported by the entire team," Jan stated.

Bravo, who made a magnificent 197 in the first innings was named man-of-the-match by adjudicator and former T&T middle-order batsman Narine Bideshi.

T&T will play Kenya in a third round match starting at Shaw Park in Tobago on Friday, while West Indies-B play the Leewards in Nevis.
