GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) - Heavy overnight and early morning showers, causing almost complete flooding of the outfield, forced umpires Terence Birbal and Dashroy Balgobin to abandon play on day three of the bottom-of-the-table fourth round match in the Carib Beer 2004 Cricket Series between Guyana and Leeward Islands at the Enmore Community Centre ground.

Except for the covered pitch area and two other parts of the outfield, the field was waterlogged with as much as three inches around the boundary.

With the surrounding drainage systems also flooded, the umpires did not hesitate in abandoning the day’s play.

Gloom prevailed for the most of the morning along the entire east coast of Demerara and forecasts predicted more showers throughout the day that would put play on the fourth day in jeopardy as well.

At the end of the second day, Guyana were battling away on 119 for four, in response to Leewards first innings total of 350, with Narsingh Deonarine leading the fight on a slow, low track with a dogged unbeaten 44.

Should the rest of the match be abandoned due to the weather then pointless Guyana would register their first points of the series, while Leewards will move up to nine points.
