THE penultimate day of the Georgetown leg of the Regional Mashramani competition was staged yesterday and the young students of Georgetown were definitely in the Mash spirit with their vibrant colours, talents and creativity.
While some of the displays showed a lack preparation, others portrayed the true diversity of the Guyanese people at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The students flounced to upbeat Soca hits including "Balloon City" and "Umbrella Party" both out of Calypsonian Compton Hodges among others.
The costumes were judged in two categories: Topical and Fantasy.
Some of the outstanding pieces in the nursery department were "Tropical Blends" coming out of St. Agnes who placed first, "The Princess Sea Goddess" from Precious Jewels Nursery who got second place and "One Hundred and One Dalmatian" coming out of the Kingston Nursery school.
Nursery Group winners were Happy Hearts Nursery with "Fun in the Sun", Precious Jewels "Aqua Beauty", and Kingston Nursery with their piece "Miss Guyana Universe 04".
Very Colourful: Onesha Hutson of St. Gabriel's displays her first place costume dubbed "queen of colours".
5-7 Group in the Topical category, saw Ketley Primary carting away the first prize with their piece "Pageant Crazy", in second place was "A wish for Unity for Development" coming out of Green Acres, while Rama Krishna with their piece "Harmony" got the judges approval for the third place.
Fantasy category winners were St. Ambrose Primary with "Let's Help to Beautify Guyana", and Thomas More Primary in second and first place respectively.
In the 8-10 Individual category winning pieces were "Queen of Colours", "Pocahontas", "Linkage for sure in 2004" and "Let's Unite with a smile from the St. Gabriel's, East La Penitence, Ketley and St. Angela's Primary in that same order.
Group winners included "Milling Spanish into our Curriculum in 2004" coming out of St. Ambrose Primary with third place, and "Social Etiquette and Manners" from St. Stephen's Primary placing first.
A beautiful costume with a performance just as beautiful saw North Georgetown Primary carting off the first prize in the 11-13 category with Shanai Gomes' performance of "Queen of Queens".
Second and third place winners in the same category were Sacred Heart Primary and Tucville Secondary respectively.
The last category, the 14-17 saw very little schools participating resulting in a lack of any real competition.
The three schools taking part in the individual category were Marian Academy, who secured first with their "Jewels of the Nile" piece, Dolphin Secondary "The Golden Princess of Unity", placing second in the fantasy category.
The only entry in the Topical category was Charlestown Government School with "Beauty lies in diversity through unity."
