PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten, (CMC) - Opening batsman Devon Smith smashed his fifth first-class century and steered the Windward Islands towards first innings points over the Leewards Islands in their 5th round Carib Beer Series match at the Carib Lumber Ground yesterday.

Grenadian Smith stroked 159 and the Windward Islands, replying to the Leewards’ first innings score of 378 for nine declared, batted throughout the day and closed at 370 for five.

Captain Rawl Lewis, with a positive 62 not out, and wicketkeeper Lindon James (14) were the not-out batsmen at stumps.

From an overnight position of 40 without loss, the Windwards quickly lost Rommel Currency, but rallied with a blistering century stand between Smith and Craig Emmanuel.

Currency had added just two runs to his overnight score before he was caught -- by Shane Jeffers at gully -- driving at medium pacer Wilden Cornwall for 11.

The 19-year-old Emmanuel joined Smith and dominated the second-wicket partnership with a flurry of superb shots, predominantly through the offside.

He hit seven boundaries -- mostly square drives and cover drives -- as he rushed to his fifty off 76 balls.

The left-handed Smith, who played four Tests and three One-Day Internationals for the West Indies last year, reached his half-century off 106 balls with five boundaries.

The pair achieved their 100-run partnership off just 63 balls and the Leewards lost their captain Stuart Williams during the session when he damaged his finger while fielding at extra-cover. He was off for the remainder of the day.

Emmanuel, who missed the Windwards’ last two games because of a rib injury, departed early in the post-lunch session, stumped by Jason Williams as he fell victim to a teasing off-spin by stand-in captain Alex Adams.

The St Lucian teenager scored 73 off 143 balls with nine fours and shared in a 154-run stand with Smith.

West Indies pacer Adam Sanford then triggered a quick decline in the Windwards middle-order when he sent back Kenroy Martin (17) and Darren Sammy (4) in the space of six runs as the score dipped to 239 for four.

Martin was caught behind after he tried to evade a testing bouncer, and Sammy pushed forward and edged to wicketkeeper Williams.

Smith brought up his hundred with a sizzling drive through extra cover off Cornwall, his third regional first-class century coming off 182 balls with 12 boundaries, as he guided the Windwards to 245 for four at tea.

Bothered by cramps in his arm, Smith battled on after the break but eventually gave the Leewards their only success in the last session.

He was dropped on 157 by Virgil Browne, who failed to clutch a return catch, but added just two more runs before he edged the left-arm spinner to wicketkeeper Williams, attempting a forcing shot to a short ball outside the off-stump.

Smith posted 106 for the fifth wicket with Lewis and his innings was laced with 18 fours and one six, a classy, flicked shot off his hip over the backward square boundary off Sanford.

Lewis, who took charge while the ailing Smith was fading, reached his fifty off 77 balls with five fours and one six -- an extra-cover drive off medium pacer Kerry Jeremy.

He has so far struck eight fours in all and is set to steer his team early today to the further nine runs needed for first innings points.

Bowling for the Leewards, Sanford, with two for 102 off 31 overs, Adams (1-31), Cornwall (1-64) and Browne (1-84) are the wicket-takers so far.
