Over the years, the festival has coincided with Guyana’s Republic anniversary. To get a glimpse of the annual float parade, Guyanese both near and far travel to Georgetown for this main event, with colourful costumes parading to the sound of pulsating rhythms of soca and calypso music.

Already, Mash camps are busy putting the finishing touches to costumes, while singers are rehearsing to take to the stages.

Mashramani began in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Berbice) through the Jaycees of Linden as part of the Independence celebrations of 1970s.

‘Mashramani’ is an Amerindian word from “mashirimehi” which means cooperative effort and is celebrated on February 23 annually.

Our roving cameras asked members of the public to share their views on Mash 2004.
