NAIN, St Elizabeth, (CMC) - Donovan Pagon led Jamaica to victory over Trinidad and Tobago on the fourth and final day of their sixth round Carib Beer Series encounter at the Alpart Sports Club yesterday.

Set 265 to win, the Jamaicans battled to victory at 266 for seven late on the fourth and final day to snatch maximum points after trailing by 82 runs on first innings.

Jamaica moved to joint second on 40 points with Trinidad and Tobago in the standings with one round remaining in the championship.

Pagon, who resumed from his overnight 38, fell six short of a century after batting resolutely in the morning session and part of the post-lunch period.

Needing 168 more runs when they started the day on 97 for one, Pagon and Maurice Kepple applied themselves as they played straight and batted cautiously on a pitch that was keeping low.

However, six minutes before lunch Kepple (55) received a ball, which kept low and clipped the outside of the off-stump.

The 292 minutes he took in grafting his 179-ball knock, which only contained three fours, was an indication of how the pitch was playing, and the attitude adopted by the Jamaicans.

The two had added 116 for the second wicket, having taken the score from 37 on the evening of the third day to 153.

On resumption after lunch Pagon was joined by Tamar Lambert (39), who signalled his intention to up the tempo by immediately hitting part-time spinner Aneil Kanhai for six, as the Trinidadians had resorted to packing the leg-side and bowling on the pads.

The new ball was taken in mid-afternoon and in the second over, Bravo’s first, the aggressive Lambert was bowled between bat and pad.

The Trinidadians were happy to see the back of Lambert after he had struck four fours and a six in his 88-ball knock.

David Bernard arrived at the crease to partner Pagon, but three runs later the anchor of the innings was disappointingly dismissed after a barrage of short balls from Bravo.

In fact it was the fourth in the over, which Pagon skied to deep forward square leg as Kanhai ran from long leg and took an excellent catch, diving and tumbling.

This was Pagon’s highest score for Jamaica despite having scored a century for West Indies-B a few seasons ago as he hit a six and 10 fours in his 277-ball innings.

The Jamaicans then went to tea at 239 for five as Bravo got a ball to creep past Carlton Baugh’s bottom edge and roll onto the stumps.

The Jamaicans had the deficit down to 13, when David Bernard (14) nicked Marlon Black’s away swinger for Jaggernauth at first slip to take a wonderful catch diving low to his left.

Two runs later and the Trinidadians were in bacchanal as Odean Brown (1) flicked Black into the comfortable grasp of wide mid-on.

With eleven runs looking like a mountain and tension, Breese kept his head to tick off the runs. With three runs needed, he flicked Modeste to fine leg for a boundary and leapt high in celebration.
