Mashramani 2004 was certainly in the air yesterday as thousands took to the streets to view the colourful, innovative costumes and float parades.

The atmosphere was buzzing with revellers, families and children as some moved gratifying to the blasting music that came from various sound systems while others drank alcoholic beverages.

This event saw Guyanese of all walks of life eagerly lined up along the streets of Georgetown waiting to get a glimpse of the float parade as they pitch tents boasting picnic baskets, flags, and rags as they hid themselves under large brimmed straw hats and umbrellas.

Some Guyanese came as early as 6:00 am yesterday morning to set up their stalls and tents while others came a bit later.

Business was booming as the food and beverage vendors displayed various dishes and the crowd went after the hot dishes as hunger kicked in.

There were also various booths including face painting, photography, fruits, hats, toys and craft.

The float parades came along one after the other blaring hot lyrics from the huge boom boom boxes on trucks followed by dancing revellers smartly dressed in hand made clothing ranging from straws to beads.

For the most part, Guyanese were out on the streets for fun, they displayed rum and other alcoholic beverages and dancing.

The police presence was not missed as they placed barricades at strategic locations urging patrons to stay within limits.

The event did not go down incident free, there were a few minor accidents involving bicycles and children who were left unsupervised.

Guyanese partied way into night fall and while others went to the National Park and various discos to end the evening of fun.
