IT was joy in the Guyana dressing room on Sunday as the team celebrated their convincing victory over Kenya by an innings and 114 runs at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda.

Starting their fourth round Carib Beer match against Leeward Islands with no points in the bag, Guyana can proudly now challenge for honours when they oppose Barbados on Thursday at the Kensington Oval in the Carib Beer International Challenge semifinal.

But according to skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Thursday’s match against the Bajans is one that his team will have to be guarded about.

“We have to stay focus in the match, even though we came out victorious against Kenya, we had some shortcomings since our batting was not up to expectation. Only Shewnarine Chattergoon, Ramnaresh Sarwan and myself really did anything with the bat during the match and that’s one aspect of our game that we will have to work on”, the captain quipped.

Chanderpaul, who led Guyana to the 2003 Red Stripe Bowl trophy, said the bowling has become better over the past few matches.

Manager of the team Carl Moore also spoke to Chronicle Sport after the victory Sunday and said he is convinced that Guyana will bring home the Carib Beer International Challenge Shield.

“We are going to take the series, our team is batting and bowling better and the confidence of the players have been boosted with the return of the two big bats in Chanderpaul and Sarwan. Everything is clicking and I am sure we will come out victorious,” a confident Moore said.

Meanwhile, West Indies-B team player Ryan Ramdass has been drafted into the Guyana thirteen for the Barbados match in place of the out-of-form Krishna Arjune.
