JAMSHEDPUR, India, (CMC) - India recorded a seven-wicket victory over ailing West Indies yesterday to take a 2-0 lead in their five-match Women’s One-Day International (ODI) cricket series.

The West Indies girls, who lost the first match on Thursday by 105 runs are battling health problems, with diarrhoea plaguing several members of the squad.

“This morning we had about five girls down with stomach problems, visiting the bathroom regularly,” coach Ann Browne-John said.

“The captain Stephanie Power actually was so weak that when she went to bat, she fainted on the field and is still hospitalised taking drips,” Browne-John added.

In spite of a strong start, the West Indies were bowled out for 161 in the 50th over, and India responded with 161 for three in the 42nd over.

From a position of 84 without loss in the 12th over, the Caribbean side failed to negotiate the Indian spin attack and their innings declined sharply.

Nadine George, who top-scored on Thursday with a half-century, led the scoring again with 47, but Nelly Williams (27) was the only other significant scorer as Neetu David picked up five for 20, to complement her four-wicket haul in Thursday’s win.

Jata Sharma (78) and Anjun Jain (55) then paced the Indians to a comfortable win with more than seven overs to spare.

The third ODI will be played on Wednesday.
