Shocked citizens yesterday afternoon were asking one another what could have prompted former Tactical Services Unit (TSU) member Soloman Elijah Blackman to go berserk killing two of his colleagues and wounding another two?

Hours after the shooting spree, the Chronicle learnt that Blackman seems to have a history of mental instability and a tendency to perpetrate physical violence.

According to one source, the ex-cop was involved in an incident last year when he was shot in the foot by a Police rank. Blackman had allegedly resisted arrest while claiming to be the President of Guyana.

Additionally, information provided by the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Public Relations Office, shows that Blackman has been convicted of three offences – including acts of grievous bodily harm – and also has one undisclosed matter “pending before the Court.”

Yesterday’s incident seemed to have been triggered by Blackman’s eviction from his 34 Bent Street, Wortmanville apartment yesterday morning. According to his landlord, Mr. Terry Wong, the former Policeman was over two years in arrears on his rent. After Blackman went home yesterday morning and found that he had been thrown out, he went to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, after which he took his grievance to the Brickdam Station.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited his former place of abode yesterday residents in the area spoke about Blackman’s propensity for violence. One woman recalled that he had dislocated her shoulder two years ago.

President Bharrat Jagdeo and Minister of Home Affairs, Ronald Gajraj, have both in separate statements expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased.
