THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn the attempted murder charge against Mahendra Baijnauth, one of the two policemen recently committed to stand jury trial for the capital offence in relation to the unlawful killing of University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas.

Police Chief Inspector Gordon Peters communicated the decision to Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen yesterday, in the presence of Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos, who is representing the remanded prisoner.

Baijnauth had been charged with attempting to kill Ronson Gray, another of the other occupants in the car with Douglas when he was fatally shot on Sheriff Street, Georgetown, last year March 1.

On February 17, 2004, Baijnauth and co-accused Gerald Alonzo were bound over to be tried at the next criminal sessions of the Demerara Assizes in the High Court.
