FRIENDS of Peace Programme Guyana Chapter yesterday unveiled their fourth peace pole, which was planted in the Botanical Gardens, to promote peace among individuals, groups and most importantly, one's self.
The simple ceremony was marked with the presence of students from several city schools and representatives of the Friends of Peace Programme, Guyana Chapter.
After brief introductions several school children unveiled the peace pole, inscribed with the words "Overcome evil with peace," "This is the way of peace," "And hatred with love."
According to Friends of Peace Programme Guyana Chapter Secretary, Dr. Eton Simon, the planting of the peace pole was intended to inspire people to be peaceful to self and to others.
He said the organization has several projects ongoing. These include the distribution of peace publications to promote peace, lectures and workshops manned by professional counselors, visits to the Camp Street Prison as part of its outreach programmes, the creation of a peace curriculum for schools, the establishment of a mobile unit for spreading peace, and the showing of peace videos.
Dr. Simon told the Guyana Chronicle that the non-governmental organization (NGO) was formed in Guyana in less than a year and it consists of 12 board members.
Friends of Peace Programme Guyana Chapter is a peace organization with its headquarters in the U.S. state of California, and its mission is to promote peace.
The three other peace poles are standing at Church and Main Streets, City Hall and Promenade Gardens. (Michel Outridge)
