CRAB HILL, Barbados, (CMC) - Daren Powell edged Corey Collymore to Floyd Reifer as Barbados again completed the West Indies first-class championship double of winning the Carib Beer Cup and Carib Beer International Challenge yesterday.

After being led on first innings by 116 runs, the Barbadians fought back to post 315 in their second innings and gave Jamaica a target of 200 runs to win. But the visitors were dismissed for 115 in their second innings about 40 minutes before lunch on the last day at the North Stars Social & Cultural Club to formalise an 85-run triumph for Barbados.

“We did not turn up on the opening day of the match, but the senior players kept that we should not worry because we will not be beaten, so we just stuck to the task, worked hard and always thought we had a good chance of winning if we got Jamaica batting on the last day,” Barbados captain Courtney Browne said.

“We felt Jamaica came to play for a draw in this match, but we do not play for draws. We always felt that way and, at the end of the day, everyone knew what they had to do and worked out for us.”

After Jamaica continued from their bedtime position of 69 for six, they were dismissed for their lowest total against Barbados in Barbados eclipsing a total of 118 they made at Kensington Oval 10 years ago.

Two wickets from consecutive balls set back the Jamaicans early. Odean Browne was caught at third slip for eight fending a short, rising delivery from Ian Bradshaw and Carl Baugh was lbw for zero playing back and across to Pedro Collins off the the first ball of the next over to leave Jamaica 77 for eight.

For just an hour, Nehemiah Perry and Daren Powell defied the Barbadians with a stand of 30 for the ninth wicket and in between a few dropped catches played some meaty strokes, none more spectacular than a Powell square drive off Collins for four.

West Indies fast bowler Tino Best was introduced from the southern end and made the breakthrough when Perry was adjudged lbw for 13 and, though, Powell hit Corey Collymore for a huge straight six, there was to be no comeback story for Jamaica.

Barbados played unbeaten throughout the competition, winning all of their matches in the preliminary stages before playing to a draw in the semi-final against Guyana.

Three Barbadians won individual awards. Pedro Collins received the Courtney Walsh Trophy for the most wickets, Floyd Reifer, named Man-of-the-Final, captured the Clive Lloyd Trophy for most catches by an outfielder, and Browne claimed the Deryck Murray Trophy for most dismissals by a ‘keeper.

Jamaica’s Andrew Richardson copped the Andy Roberts Trophy for the most promising fast bowler, Windward Islands’ opening batsman Devon Smith took the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy for the most runs, and Trinidad & Tobago’s Dwayne Bravo took the Malcolm Marshall Award for the leading all-rounder.
