President Bharrat Jagdeo sent out text messages yesterday to every cellular phone user in the country wishing "a Happy and Prosperous New Year to you and your family from President Bharrat Jagdeo and the First Lady."
With over 100,000 cell phones in operation and the standard text message costing $8 this would work out to a cost to the taxpayer of $800,000.
Robert Persaud, Liaison to the President said the charges would be borne by the Office of the President (OP) and without going into details said it was "not too costly".
Persaud noted that it was just another medium the president was using apart from the televised New Year's Address and said OP was exploring the technology as a way to interact directly with the public taking into account the limitations.
