On February 17, 2001 Andrew `Sixhead' Lewis, in a blaze of glory became the pride and joy of Guyana.
Through hard work and dedication, Mr `Sixhead' was able to snatch the vacant World Boxing Association welterweight title when he walloped James Page.
There were glowing tributes, and the usual "I knew that he would have done this and that." Several promises were made to Lewis by private individuals and companies.
Not to be outdone, the government of Guyana joined in the pledges. And while our leaders delivered on the promise of house and land to the champion one promise is yet to be fulfilled.
It has been over two years since government promised the people of Guyana a gym in honour of Lewis becoming the first representative from this country to win a world title.
Lewis has now lost that title and it seems that we may have to wait until he becomes a grandfather for the gym to be handed over to the people of Guyana who are its rightful owners.
The building of the gym has been completed but its doors remain closed. Sportscope wonders what is holding the government back from handing it over.
Do we have to with for the `Albouystown Cyclone' to win another world title before a move is made?
One government source claimed that the gym is still not fitted with equipment and that the relevant authority is in the process of procuring these. The tender process to arrive at a contractor to supply the equipment was also given as an excuse for the delay in the handing over of the gym.
But the building was completed almost eight months ago so why is the equipment taking so long? Is it that the gym no longer warrants a place on the front burner?
This is 2004, the gym was promised since 2001. It is indeed a shame that many potential `Sixheads' have to wait until government says it's time for them to get a decent place to perfect the art of boxing.
