Volleyball set to `explode'

The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) has dubbed this year as "Volleyball explosion 04" with the emphasis on women and schools.
According to a release from the GVF, president Lennie Shuffler, at a retreat held last month, called on the representatives of the various associations to build on their success of recent years. He also disclosed that teams from Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Grenada and Suriname and club teams from Brazil had indicated an interest in visiting Guyana.
The federation has identified Corriverton, Mabaruma, Linden and Lethem as strategic areas for the plan.
Arnold Sukhraj from the Department of Education, revealed plans for the introduction of volleyball in 16 schools in Georgetown while Ceon Glasgow outlined plans for the promotion of the game in Berbice schools.
National player Celena Langhorne updated the participants on the state of the game among schools and females in Linden.
Guyana Teachers' Union Sports Secretary Eon Austin, gave a brief presentation dealing with ways in which the GTU can assist in promoting the game in schools.
