Guyana will be aiming to stopBarbados' unbeaten run in the 2004 Carib Beer regional first-class, four-day, cricket competition when the two arch-rivals clash today at the famous Kensington Oval in the first semi-final of the 2004 Carib Beer Cricket Series.

Led by test left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Guyana come into today's game with three back-to-back wins under their belt, after rebounding from three defeats in their first three 'away' games to clinch a place in the final four.

The Guyana batting is strong with Chanderpaul and fellow test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, who scored 199 in the last game, the backbone of the line-up.

Barbados, hunting their 20th regional title since sponsored regional first-class cricket began in 1966, became the first team to win seven consecutive games when they beat Trinidad and Tobago in the last round.

Ryan Ramdass, who scored 312 runs for the West Indies 'B' team is set to make his regional first-class debut for Guyana after playing six matches in last year's Red Stripe Bowl.

He will open the batting with Sewnarine Chattergoon and the pair will hope to give Guyana a solid start on a track expected to offer early pace and bounce for the bowlers.

Narsingh Deonarine and Travis Dowlin have both been in good form recently and along with the all-rounders Mahendra Nagamootoo, Neil McGarrell and wicket-keeper Vishal Nagamootoo, Guyana is capable of posting a huge score on a ground where they lost by 10 wickets when they last played Barbados last month in the first round.

The Guyana team could also see the recall of fast bowler Esaun Crandon to share the new ball with Rayon Griffith. Damodar Daesrath filled that role on the slow, low Guyana tracks in the four home games.

The Guyana bowling will be spearheaded by leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo, who, along with McGarrell is the top wicket-taker for Guyana this season with 23 scalps.

Support should come from Dowlin's steady off-spin and Sarwan's leg-spin.

Off-spinner Zaheer Mohammed could lose his place to Crandon while the tour selectors could have a difficult task deciding who to drop for Ramdass. The toss-up could be between Daesrath and Deonarine.

The Guyana side arrived in Barbados on Tuesday evening and had their final practice session yesterday.

Coach Albert Smith told Stabroek Sport that his side is confident of doing well and rearing to go into action today.

"We had a good session today [yesterday] and everyone is fit and looking forward to this game," Smith said.

The coach said that the final eleven will be named this morning.

He mentioned that the pitch at Kensington looked dry when the Guyana side had a fielding session at the test venue yesterday afternoon.

Smith said with the return of Chanderpaul and Sarwan, the batting is strong while he feels Nagamootoo, who missed two games this season and who is 13 wickets away from Clyde Butts' regional first-class record of 270 wickets, could be a handful for the Bajans in this game.

"I am pleased that the GCB sent a physio from Guyana...this is a step in the right direction and we will work very hard to reach the final and keep the Golden Arrowhead flying proudly," Smith said.

Barbados will be without their leading wicket-taker and fastest bowler Tino Best and their most experienced bowler Vasbert Drakes. Best, with 35 wickets from six games, has an instep injury, while Drakes was not selected. West Indies all-rounder Ryan Hurley has recovered from a foot injury but will not play in the eleven today.

Ian Bradshaw, who missed the last game, is back and, along with Fidel Edwards, Corey Collymore and Pedro Collins, will do the fast bowling for Barbados.

The Bajan batting is strong with the experienced Sherwin Campbell, one of three batsmen to record double centuries this season, one of seven batsmen with 400 runs to their name.

Kirk Wilkinson, Floyd Reifer, Ryan Hinds, Dwayne Smith and the skipper Courtney Brown are capable of big scores at this level and a high scoring game is anticipated.

Guyana last won the title in 2002 while Barbados, already the runaway Carib Beer Cup champions with the maximum 84 points, won both the Cup and International shield last year.

The weather is expected to be great for cricket and a large crowd is expected to see 12 players with test cricket experience taking centre stage.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) must be highly commended for ensuring that the female physiotherapist who worked with the team in the Guyana matches travelled to Barbados yesterday to be with the team.
