Alexis Glasgow may have failed to bring home that long-awaited international crown, but the ever-smiling Berbician beauty made her mark while in Sanya, China and has landed a new job.
The reigning Miss Guyana World is the new face of Urban Therapy, a United Kingdom-based hair care line of products recently launched in Guyana. Glasgow, a former cabin attendant with Universal Airlines has been named Caribbean spokesperson for Urban Therapy.
The beauty recently shared with Stabroek News on her trip to China, her new job and moving on from Universal.
"China is not what I had perceived it to be. I had pictured small villages, country like settings and somewhat introverted people. Little did I know that Sanya was a modern city with very hospitable people who treated me like a celebrity during my stay," she said.
Pampering was just one the luxuries Glasgow habitually indulged in, which were afforded all of the delegates. China's finest cuisine was daily fare.
Before the trip to Sanya, Glasgow was rubbing shoulders with New Yorkers in the Big Apple putting her wardrobe together. From grooming to shopping, the days spent in New York were crucial as chaperon and designer, Derek Moore worked assiduously to outfit Alexis for the pageant.
Moore wanted to create bold pieces that were different, chic and stunning. He wanted the clothes to not only fit Glasgow perfectly but also complement her olive brown skin.
And like every other Miss World hopeful Alexis wanted to make a statement, but the pressure was on for her to nail every step she made in her stiletto heels. "Stepping right is part of what you stand for on the international scene and if you boast that confidence to be Miss World then you must step like Miss World," Glasgow explained.
So her daily routine included rigorous modeling, hours of stepping right and polishing her walk. This was not new territory for Glasgow; it was simply perfecting what she already knew.
Then it was over to London where she worked on a piece for the talent leg of the competition. Her song, a new version of "Beautiful Guyana" was rehearsed at a London studio for a week until it was audience friendly.
Acknowledging that her song paled in comparison to other performances in the talent segment, Glasgow said she gave it her all. The local queen pointed out that her effort did count for something; the judges listened and grabbing their attention was difficult.
Paired with Miss India, Ami Vashi as her roommate while in China, Glasgow was exposed to some Indian culture and found the experience quite interesting. Believing it to be an opportunity to broaden her horizons she soaked up every word her roommate uttered and learnt more about the India and its people.
She admitted that the one-on-one rap sessions with Vashi, who spoke fluent English, brought on feelings of homesickness. Craving a plate of fried vegetables and cook-up rice among other things Glasgow spent about an hour each day envisioning her return home.
The experience in China provided room for her to grow as person. The queen said she found herself while handling defeat and is now mentally stronger. Repeatedly coping with situations as they faced her was a challenge and she emerged a fighter.
Living each day by the phrase, "If something is for you then you will get it" Glasgow said she bowed out of the competition and has learned to live with it. She said her focus is on keeping a level head and remaining open to options.
Maintaining that China has changed her in no way the queen said that she is still humble. "I am still easy going Alexis who greets everyone with a smile. Why would I change? Everyone here has been nothing but kind to me."
So will she join predecessors Olive Gopaul and Odessa Phillips, gracing the stage again in competition for the title of Miss Guyana Universe? Glasgow said the thought crossed her mind but she has no such intention.
With the belief that everyone deserves a moment she said that she was blessed to win the Miss Guyana World title and is hoping that her successors will feel equal joy; to compete for Miss Guyana Universe might deny another their moment.
As for saying good-bye to Universal, Glasgow said the airline company fulfilled her lifelong dream when she was welcomed on board to be trained as a cabin attendant. The experience at Universal was invaluable, according to her.
Her new venture with Urban Therapy will allow her to continue the dream, as her job includes extensive travelling.
In the eyes of her admirers, Alexis Glasgow has done Guyana proud. The little Berbician girl with big dreams won over the city in her quest for the Miss Guyana World title and is fast winning the support of the wider world.
