The inclusion of athletes from private schools is under review for this year's Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers Union/Banks Malta National Schools Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships billed to get underway on Tuesday at the Enmore Community Centre ground.
According to GTU's Immediate Past President Lance Baptiste, the Union is currently in discussions with the Ministry of Education to consider if athletes from private schools should be allowed to participate in the annual championships.
According to Baptiste, several of the Union's branches are seeking to include athletes from the many private schools that have mushroomed around the country over the past year or two in their lists of competitors.
Baptiste pointed out that the North Georgetown District in particular want to include athletes from the Business School, but the Union is not in agreement since, according to the Immediate past President, if they are included, then other Branches would want to do likewise.
Baptiste however admitted that two years ago, athletes from Mae's Under-12, School of the Nation and Marian Academy were allowed to participate.
He said the GTU and the Chief Education Officer are in discussions to have the matter resolved and a decision will be made before next Tuesday.
