Food prices rise

Consumer prices rose .8% from December 2003 to January spurred on by increases in the food group.

Vegetables and vegetable products increased by 15.1%, fruits and fruit products by six per cent and pulses and pulse products by 4.4% . The prices for oils and fats increased by 1.2%; sugar, honey and related products by 2.8%; and alcoholic beverages by 1.6%.

On the other hand, meat, fish and egg prices fell by 4.2%, milk and milk products dropped marginally by 0.1%; condiments and spices by 4.4%; non-alcoholic beverages by 0.3%; and tobacco and tobacco products by 0.3%. The decline in these prices was insufficient to offset the increases in the other items in the food subgroup.

The prices of other goods and services also increased with furniture and household services seeing an increase of 4.1% and the subcategory of domestic services increasing by 19.4%.

Educational, recreational and cultural services increased by 3.1%. The subcategory of newspapers and books rose by 10.9% while medical expenses and medical and dental services declined by 1.4% and 3.3% respectively.

Inflation year on year stands at 5.3%.
