Grenada brushed aside Guyana 3-1 when the two teams met in the return game of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier Football Tournament at the Blairmont Community Centre ground yesterday.
Ricky Charles, Jason Roberts and Tyron Bubb netted for Grenada in the 15th, 69th and 89th minutes respectively, while Cary Harris found the back of the visitors' net in the 29th minute.
Playing in front of approximately 2000 fans, the locals looked mediocre against the opposition which comprised eight professional players.
The Guyanese started at a fast clip attacking the opposition from the first whistle and missed two opportunities to score within the first 10 minutes of play.
Grenada on the other hand opened their account with their first shot to Guyana's goal.
The ball was played from the left wing to the centre of Guyana's 18-yard box. Local custodian Andrew Durant apparently misjudged the flight of the ball as he went up in the air, the ball fell behind his back and Charles ran on and placed it inside an empty goal.
Fourteen minutes later Guyana secured a corner. A short pass was made to Gregory `Jackie Chan' Richardson who played the ball off to Harris inside Grenada's penalty box and Harris obliged to level the score, which remained unchanged at the interval.
Twenty four minutes into the second session, Roberts flew Guyana's high off-side trap after the ball was played, over the head of the locals defence. He ran on to it as Durant advanced with a sliding tackle but did not collect since Roberts pushed the ball around him (Durant), veered to the right inside the 18-yard box and converted with a left-foot shot.
Bubb then put the icing on the cake and took the fight out of the locals nearing the final whistle after he logged on to the ball down the centre in Guyana's half, dribbled the central defender, took the ball to his right side and placed it neatly into the home team's goal.
After the game, Guyana's Technical Director Neider Dos Santos told Stabroek Sport the locals missed too many scoring opportunities, but that apart, the team did not get the support from the local fans.
"I can't understand the spectators before the match, they were against us from the start. We had no support and it's only in Guyana this type of thing happens" Dos Santos said.
In an invited comment on the game, Guyana Football Federation president Colin Klass said: "Personally I feel Guyana started well, but I know the goal keeper (Durant) was timid but to blame him is a folly. We were very, very weak in the goal keeping department and while I congratulate Grenada on their victory, I must say our strikers did not score. We basically defeated ourselves. We had the best strikers in the country, but it's just one of those days."
Klass said the GFF will have to revisit the situation and make some serious decisions on the team's future.
Coach of the Grenadian team Ali DeBellotte told members of the media he knew Guyana would have come out attacking and he decided on the same strategy and because his team is blessed with better strikers than the Guyanese team he got a victory.
DeBellotte admitted that his team had a poor first half "but they took the game to a different level in the second half and now it's on to face USA in the next round" the coach proudly stated.
