MINISTER of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Dale Bisnauth, in his defence of this year's $75.6B budget yesterday at Parliament, stated that his ministry hopes to continue developing the social sector of Guyana.
Minister Bisnauth observed that with regard to labour administration, there has been a notable reduction in strikes from 2001 to 2003. This, he said, was due to the ministry settling matters of dispute with unions expeditiously.
He also alluded to the decline in the number of accidents occurring at the workplace, as well as accidents in the rivers and other waterways, as positive outcomes of the work of his ministry.
The Ministry now has programmes on stream to train workers so as to prevent accidents in the working environment.
He noted, too, that the Ministry of Labour is striving for the elimination of child labour. With several programmes underway, the staff at the ministry was strengthened in 2003.
Minister Bisnauth contended that Government's investment in education is proof that it is focused on human development. "Education is crucial to the development of the capacity to choose," he said.
Stressing that the budget is consistent with the late President Jagan's vision of development with a human face, Bisnauth reiterated that the budget "is buried in foundations laid before, and looks forward to foundations in the future." (GINA)
