THE police yesterday said that there is no new information on the whereabouts of the kidnapped Iranian. However, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad is still carrying out investigations.
The Iranian scholar, Mohammed Hassan Ibrahimi, 35, was snatched from his car by heavily armed men just outside the International Islamic College for Advanced Studies at Lot 42B United Nations Place, Brickdam, on April 2, 2004 at about 22:10 hours. The men had reportedly blocked his path and sprayed his motorcar with bullets. In the process, his administrator, Raymond Hally, was shot in the foot.
The Iranian was bundled into a dark-coloured motorcar that sped away. Although several persons witnessed the abduction, no one could identify the abductors.
The Iranian Scholar came to Guyana some 22 months ago and started the International Islamic College for Advanced Studies a few months later.
The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) and other Muslim organisations in Guyana have since expressed their concerns regarding the kidnap.
The police are of the opinion that Ibrahimi’s abductors might still have him holed up in the country since no recent information has indicated otherwise.
On Wednesday, speculation was rife that the man was found after GUYSUCO workers stumbled upon a badly mutilated body of a male in the canefields at Diamond, East Bank Demerara. But the police later said relatives said the body was not Ibrahimi’s.
Tomorrow, the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT), the Muslim Youth League (MYL), Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman (GUSIA), Imam Baqir Islamic Center, Guyana Islamic Information Centre, Guyana Islamic Institute (GII), Hujjatul Ulamaa of Guyana, Diamond Darul-Uloom and the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) will hold a press conference to address questions related to Ibrahimi’s abduction and other issues of concern at the GIT Secretariat.
