ANOTHER tragedy struck a Berbice family, when their home was destroyed by fire late Friday Evening.

The house belonging to Pammy D' Guar in Mora Street, Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, Berbice, was being shared by the woman and her two children.

Neighbours told Berbicenews that after noticing smoke coming from the two-bedroom wooden house, they decided to form a bucket brigade, dipping water from nearby trenches to put out the fire and to save other houses, since the fire was catching rapidly.

Eyewitnesses said that after seeing the thick smoke emerging from the house, two children ran out.

According to them, they believe the children contributed to the burning down of the house, which they said was old. However, some neighbours said they don't believe it was the children that caused the house to burn down; instead, they blamed the sorrowful ordeal on the fluctuation of electricity.

D' Guar, a sales woman at a popular cloth store in New Amsterdam, told Berbicenews that when she left the house some minutes to 8:00 am, no electrical appliance was left on. With much pain in her face, the 25-year-old mother said she was on her way home from work and was on the Canje Bridge when she noticed the flames. "When I saw the fire I just knew that it was my house," the woman said.

D' Guar, who was not in a condition to quantify her losses, said she was not able to save anything. She said the neighbours were concentrating more on saving the house, which vanished in a matter of minutes, than on saving anything inside. (Berbicenews)
