GEORGETOWN- If all goes well, Suzette Shim, 19, is likely to be Guyana’s representative to the Miss World 2004 pageant in Sanya, China.

Information from a source is that she is the most likely candidate from the more than 15 contestants who applied for possible selection.

Kaieteur News understands that Shim would be formerly introduced as Guyana’s representative, today. However, the pageant committee officials when contacted, said that the winner would be a surprise.

Tall and stately, Suzette, an employee of the Supreme Court Registry, would step outside of her box to enter her second pageant and the first of an international nature.

Of mainly Chinese and Indian parentage, Suzette is the fourth child for her parents. She was born at 4:00 pm on the fourth day of the week in December 1984. As a child, she loved school and cried when she couldn’t attend. She loved to climb high places and would always get up and try again when she fell. She has a very close bond with her parents and feels that she owes them a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices they made for her to get a good education.

She describes herself as funny, very emotional, talkative and modest.

It was always her dream to become a fashion designer and she sees herself as the Chie Executive Officer of her own company some day.

She is currently pursuing a Management Degree at the University of Guyana and lives by the motto: “If we really work hard, we can achieve all that we want”. Her interests include cooking, dancing and reading. The 2004 Miss World Pageant will be held for the second consecutive year in China.

The Pageant, which is usually held in December, has now been brought forward to October. As a result, the staging of the local pageant has been affected. In the past, the local pageant was held in September, allowing the Miss Guyana World organisation adequate time to fully prepare the local representative. Because of the change, the Miss Guyana World Organisation decided that it would not host a pageant this year, but rather the Committee conducted a thorough screening process to arrive at a local representative.

The Miss Guyana World Pageant committee had earlier reported that its decision was also prompted by the large number of pageants in Guyana and decreasing support from business entities.
