Making their debut at the Regional level, and on a velodrome, local cyclists Alonzo Greaves (Roraima Bikers) and Mark Lewis (Continental) captured seven golds and one silver medal between them, after two nights of competition in the West Indies versus the World Cycling Classic, currently underway in Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport by telephone, Continental Cycle Club's manager/coach John Martins said that , Greaves, who was adjudged `Most Outstanding Cyclist' at the National Schools Cycling Championships last month, captured four gold medals competing in the Junior B' Class division, while Lewis won three golds and a silver in the category 3 and 4 Divisions.
Martins also disclosed that Lewis placed second to Guyana's Jorge Emerson (Roraima Bikers) in an eight-lap event for Category 3 and 4 cyclists while another Guyanese Nicholas Thakur (Continental) placed third.
Greaves won two four-lap races as well as as two-lap and a five-lap event, while Lewis won two three-lap races as well as a seven-lap event.
Emerson placed second to Lewis in the seven-lap race.
Other Guyanese cyclists competing at the meet performed creditably, bearing in mind that Guyana does not have a velodrome or a bank track, the manager/ coach said.
According to Martins, Warren McKay (Continental) finished third in a two-lap event for category one riders. He also placed fourth in a four-lap event and sixth in a three-lap affair in the same category . He finished fourth in a `devil Takes the Hindmost' event and fifth in a 10-lap event for categories one, two, three and for juniors. John Charles (Continental) finished sixth in the same event.
Charles placed sixth in a four-lap race for category one and two riders and fourth in another four-lap race for the same category of riders. He (Charles) finished fourth in an eight-lap event and fifth in a `devil Takes the Hindmost' event also.
Judah Klass (Flying Ace) placed third to Greaves in a four-lap race for Junior Class `B' cyclists.
Martins said every club participating in the meet was invited to send representatives in the Flying 200-metre International event and Charles, while he failed to make it into the quarter-final, returned a reasonable time of 12.75 seconds. Martins said Lewis also participated in the event but developed mechanical problems.
The local pedal pushers who have been sponsored in part by Universal Airlines were expected to return to the track last evening. They competed at the Arima Velodrome on Friday and Saturday evenings and were to be in action at the Palo Seco track last evening.
