The police are still searching for kidnapped Iranian cleric, Mohammad Hassan Ebrahimi, who was abducted two Fridays ago by gunmen.

In a press release yesterday, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) condemned Ebrahimi's kidnapping while criticising the police raid on the ISA Islamic School last Thursday.

The CIOG press release said while it called on the authorities to diligently investigate Ebrahimi's kidnapping it urges that due (process) and civility be maintained at all times particularly when dealing with institutions of learning and religion."

Information reaching Stabroek News indicates the police had been acting on a tip at the time.

The organisation also called on anyone with information that might assist in the location of the kidnapped man to pass it on to the police.

Ebrahimi's kidnapping has engaged the attention of the Iranian government which has contacted the Foreign Affairs ministry. Additionally, the Iranian Ambassador to Venezuela has visited Ebrahimi's wife, Shahnaz, who is eight months pregnant.

Shahnaz has also supported the criticism levelled against the police by the Guyana Islamic Trust in relation to the raid.

Ebrahimi is the Director of the International Islamic College for Advanced Studies situated at 42B United Nations Place, Brickdam, where the kidnapping occurred. The colleague who was shot and injured is 51-year-old Raymond Halley, who according to local leader of the Shia Muslim group, Abdul Kadir, has been unable to provide any substantial details about the kidnappers.

Other leading local Muslim organisations have also condemned the kidnapping and appealed for urgent action to be taken against Ebrahimi's abductors who have neither demanded ransom nor made any other form of contact with Ebrahimi's wife or colleagues.
