Guyanese-born Denys Vaughn-Cooke was sworn in last month by Mayor Anthony Williams of Washington, DC as a Commission member of the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Caribbean Affairs. An economist and former professor at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia, he is at present the owner of Hamilton Enterprises, a real estate investment firm.

The Mayor's Commission is entrusted with furthering the collective interests of the very large and increasing Caribbean community in the Washington, DC area. According to a news release, Vaughn-Cooke has stated that he will work particularly in encouraging the Guyanese community to network and use its formidable talents and contacts to help improve the life prospects for its members.
