The PPP/C says that workers and Guyanese in general need to exercise vigilance to ensure that political and criminal activity do not destroy the achievements made so far, nor their hopes and aspirations.
In its May Day statement, the ruling PPP/C expressed its determination "to do everything within its power, in solidarity with working people, to secure the gains which have been made, to protect and improve the environment to enable further progress, (and) to expose those who divide the labour movement and restrict its capacity to continue to articulate the interests of workers."
According to the PPP/C, with the vast improvement in social conditions, particularly in relation to housing, health and education, workers have much to celebrate. The party said that today Guyana is no longer regarded as a Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC), and is now being described as a medium developing one. In the process, the PPP/C said, the working people have benefited greatly while the minimum wage has been increased by some 700% since 1992, way above the rate of inflation.
Turning to the region, the party said the situation in Haiti has caused the whole Caribbean Community much pain.
Moreover, the party expressed support for the call from CARICOM for a full investigation into the circumstances of the removal of the democratically-elected government of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
