Alleged Chowtie accomplice gets $750,000 bail

Deonauth Balram, the man who was caught with bandit, Gopaul Chowtie on the night they allegedly robbed Jules Chabrol was placed on $750,000 bail when he appeared again at the Sparendaam Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Balram called `Geewan', 38, of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara appeared before Magistrate Jerrick Stephney dressed in a white shirt and flanked by scores of relatives and friends.
He has already professed his innocence to this newspaper saying that he was abducted on the night of April 6, when he and Chowtie were found in Chabrol's yard. Chowtie was shot by police and died the morning after.
The $750,000 bail covered the charges of attempted murder, one count each of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition and two counts of robbery.
The police said Balram and Chowtie had engaged them in a gun battle just after the pair had beaten and robbed Jules and Leila Chabrol. Police Constable, Gavin Ricknauth was also injured in the fight when one of the two men fired at him.
The bandits, who were armed with an AK-47 rifle and other weapons, wore black masks and gloves and carried haversacks.
