The Muslim community in Guyana can rest assured that Youman Nabi will remain a national holiday, according to the Government Information Agency (GINA).
President Bharrat Jagdeo, according to GINA, made the declaration yesterday during his address at the Met-en-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara Jamaat where Muslims were gathered to celebrate Youman Nabi - the birth anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad.
"No government I run will ever do that," GINA quoted Jagdeo as saying in reference to speculation that the government would consider changing Youman Nabi as a national holiday.
The select parliamentary committee set up to consider adding May 5 and May 26 to the list of national holidays asked Parliament to consider after consultations with the Muslim community whether Youman Nabi should not be substituted by Eid-ul-Fitr as a national holiday for Muslims. Such a move has already been opposed by one Muslim group, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana.
The majority of the select committee members are from the ruling PPP/C.
