Cable & Wireless has announced that it will be a regional sponsor of World Cup 2007.
At a ceremony held at the Sandals Grande St Lucia Saturday night, Executive Vice President of Cable & Wireless, Paul Aspin said Cable & Wireless will be the telecommunications provider for what has been dubbed "the biggest event to come to the Caribbean."
He said "we are very pleased that we have been able to work with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) to come up with an agreement which allows us to be a regional sponsor of the event."
Commercial Manager of the ICC, Campbell Jamieson welcomed Cable & Wireless as the first regional sponsor to sign on to the event and said that all of the parties will be working very closely together to ensure that they deliver on all of the requirements needed to make it a success.
Also present at the event was CEO of World Cup 2007 Chris Dehring. He reminded the gathering of the scope of the event and said that telecommunications will be an integral part of its success. He also stated that having seen the South Africa operations, he clearly understands the telecommunications needs of World Cup 2007.
He stressed the need for the region to work together to ensure that this event in the Caribbean is the best World Cup yet.
Captain of the West Indies Team Brian Lara, expressed his pleasure with the announcement and recalled that throughout his cricketing career Cable & Wireless has been the sponsor and he was looking forward to continuing that relationship.
The agreement will allow Cable & Wireless to be involved in other ICC events leading up to World Cup 2007.
Cable & Wireless has been the major sponsor of West Indies cricket for nearly 20 years
Also in attendance at last night's function were the Prime Minister of St.Lucia, Dr. the Hon.. Kenny Anthony, President of the West Indies Cricket Board, Teddy Griffith and Principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Professor Hilary Beckles.
