The National Front Alliance (NFA) says in its Independence Day message that Guyana today stands at the crossroads, and citizens must either choose between disintegration of the state or seize the opportunity to build a truly independent and integrated society for the development and happiness of their children.

According to NFA leader, Keith Scott, the truth of Guyana's 38 years is "that we have made little progress from colonial times, that we have failed to fulfill the dreams of our people, and the legacy bequeathed to us by our forbears is now in jeopardy of destruction."

Scott further contended that the country has developed a syndrome of dependency which is mistakenly called progress. He said that "we cannot survive without aid and loans from abroad, while drugs, money laundering and corruption have become endemic."

"Our leaders have failed us," Scott declared, observing that population flight and unemployment have caused Guyanese to look outward for betterment rather than seek ways for internal growth.

However, he pointed out that Guyanese as a people are renowned for their resilience, and they must now have faith in themselves to turn the tide.
