Executive Director of Conservation International Guyana, Major General (retd) Joseph G Singh was awarded the prestigious Order of the Golden Ark.

For his outstanding contribution to nature conservation, Singh and nine other conservationists were honoured by Prince Bernard of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at a ceremony held at the Soestdijk Palace, Baarn, outside of Amsterdam on May 7.

A release from Conservation International, said Singh was one of five accorded the title of the Golden Ark, one step above knighthood, and four were awarded the title of Knight of the Order.

General Singh is the second Guyanese to have been honoured with the Order of the Golden Ark - Sir Shridath Ramphal being the other - that was established in 1917 by Prince Bernard.

He and his colleagues at Conservation International are involved with local, regional and national stakeholders in the establishment and sustainable management of Guyana's National System of Protected Areas, in raising the level of public awareness of conservation, the release said.
