The Men Of Purpose (MOP) organisation, which has committed to promoting responsible manhood, is in the process of launching a counselling service at the headquarters of the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) specifically for men.
A press release from MOP said it plans to extend such a service to every region in the conviction that such a facility can make a contribution to the elimination of conflict and other such issues in the home and community.
The organisation also expressed "concern and dismay" at the continuing trend of violence and abuse against women and children. In particular, MOP referred to the gruesome discovery in Buxton late last month of the partly decomposed bodies of a young couple in a house, victims of murder-suicide. Their infant son had been locked in a room for a number of days. Police had said the couple who shared a common-law relationship had a history of domestic violence.
"We would like to appeal to all men in Guyana to respect the God-given right to peace and well-being that our wives and women should enjoy without fear of being deprived of that human right," MOP stated.
While acknowledging that difficulties and differences would arise from time to time, MOP advocated that men should sit and discuss areas of dissatisfaction with their spouses, and whenever such discussions fail, professional help should be sought as a means of achieving conflict resolution.
