Government has reconsidered the appointment of former acting police commissioner, Floyd McDonald and instead of him heading the recently constituted Anti-Narcotics Commission, he will take up a position within the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Speaking at his post-cabinet press briefing, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Roger Luncheon retracted his earlier announcement that McDonald was appointed coordinator of the anti-drugs body. Luncheon said on Friday that McDonald's services have been retained but in a support role in the administration of the Home Affairs sector.

He did not specify what job the former top cop will be taking up, saying that the ministry will find a suitable one for him.

According to the HPS, an appointment within the secretariat of the National Anti-Narcotic Commission was earlier under consideration but was overtaken by a subsequent appreciation of the need for him to support the administration of the agency.

Luncheon in apologising for the mistake said the error was brought to his attention subsequently.

The new commission which was established by President Bharrat Jagdeo is charged with the responsibility of implementing the national drug strategy currently under review.

McDonald who retired from the Guyana Police Force on February 16 this year served that agency in varying capacities for some 36 years.
