GUYANA’S latest World champion Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil, yesterday, received the $5 million cheque to assist in constructing a house as part of gifts pledged by President Bharrat Jagdeo for her historic achievement.
In a simple ceremony at the Office of the President, Political Adviser to the President, Kellawan Lall, handed over the cheque.
“Congratulations again and here is our tangible expression of appreciation for your win,” Lall said.
President Jagdeo, also, promised a middle-income house lot and duty-free concession to buy a car.
The ‘Stealth Bomber’ wrested a unanimous decision over American Kathy Rivers on May 29 at the National Park, to win the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) light heavyweight title, becoming the country’s fourth world champion and at the same time, the female world champion.
O’Neil also had the distinction of being first Guyanese to win a world title at home on the first ever world title card staged here.
The three other world champions, former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis, World Boxing Council (WBC) cruiserweight champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwatie and WBA junior welterweight champion ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris were all accorded similar honour for winning their respect titles.
