PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo supports the proposals put up by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter to help end the continuing political deadlock here, his Information Liaison, Mr Robert Persaud says.
“President Jagdeo has always been willing to meet (PNCR Leader Mr Robert) Corbin and this position he restated to Mr Carter during their two meetings”, he said in a comment on Carter’s departure statement.
“President Jagdeo’s hope is that the expected meeting with the Opposition Leader would focus on shifting all the matters under consideration for debate in the Parliament. This meeting is not to return to the old format of dialogue, but to have these issues debated in the Parliament as the President had earlier indicated in his proposal for the new format of the dialogue”, the spokesman explained.
He said Mr Jagdeo has long advocated that the National Development Strategy should be debated in Parliament, adding that the government has already tabled “this important document” in Parliament.
“Similarly, the positions that the Standing Committee on Constitutional Reform should be reactivated to look at various reform proposals, and an independent civil society forum be created for structured national discussions are consistent with President Jagdeo’s views”, Persaud said.
He said the President looks forward to the continued engagement of the Carter Center in Guyana.
