THE Atlanta-based Carter Center has corrected a “very misleading” report published in the Sunday Stabroek of August 15, the Government Information Agency (GINA) noted yesterday.

The agency recalled that the newspaper reported that the diplomatic community here ”came in for criticism from former U.S. President Jimmy Carter for failing to rally to the defence of their colleague, UNDP Resident Representative, Jan San Sorenson and in general not insisting on better governance".

It said that Jason Calder, Assistant Director of the Global Development Initiative at the Carter Center, has advised the newspaper that no such occurrence or discussion took place between former President Carter and the donor community while he was here last week.

According to Mr Calder's letter published in the Stabroek News yesterday, “The story implied that President Carter criticized the donor community on the question of President Jagdeo's loss of confidence in the UNDP Resident Representative”. He said, "President Carter did not take a position on this matter."

GINA said the Stabroek News stated in its inaccurate article that in Mr Carter's meeting with the international and donor community, “the diplomats and representatives expressed their frustrations and their own limitations in dealing with the situation”.

Stabroek News had quoted an un-named source, which it claimed was close to the diplomatic community, as stating that President Carter “chided” them for not taking a stand on President Jagdeo's expressed lack of confidence in Sorenson, GINA said.

“This is the latest such episode where the Stabroek News has been exposed for carrying erroneous information relating to the government”, the agency said.
