THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF) plans to reward Dianne Ferreira-James, who officiated in the Olympic women’s football final in Athens.
In a release, yesterday, the GFF promised: “The GFF will show its appreciation in a tangible way.”
The GFF and its General Council extended public congratulations and said they were “very proud” of Ferreira-James’ “continued progress” to the top of the refereeing world.
We trust she will continue to strive for excellence. She was undoubtedly the best of the referees in the tournament.”
The GFF explained that Ferreira-James was assigned the fourth official because it was not prudent for her to referee the final because finalist USA and herself were both from CONCACAF.
But luck was on her side and she did a marvellous job.”
Ferreira-James had to do the remainder of the match between the USA and Brazil when the referee pulled up.
Fourth officials, who are referees, are so assigned to take over when the game referee cannot continue, similar to a beauty contest in which the first runner-up takes over if the queen cannot carry out her duties for whatever reason.
