Rice harvesting for spring crop a success

Rice harvesting for the spring crop countrywide has been encouraging. According to the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), the overall production for this crop was recorded at 4,270,204 bags of paddy harvested in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six. The overall percentage of rice harvested countrywide was recorded at 98.1 percent with 4.3 tonnes and 66.0 bags per hectare.

In Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), the target set for the Essequibo area was 13,158 hectares, while 12,873 hectares were prepared and sown and 12,849 hectares were harvested. The amount of paddy harvested amounted to 953,984 bags. The percentage harvested was 99.8 percent with a yield at 4.7 tonnes per hectare and 74.2 bags per hectare. This is equivalent to 39,389 bags of rice.

In Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) at Wakenaam, the target was set at 1,296 hectares while 1,134 hectares were prepared and sown and 1,130 hectares were harvested. This resulted in 66,960 bags of paddy. The percentage harvested was 99.6 with a yield of 3.8 tonnes per hectare and 59.3 bags per hectare, equivalent to 2,765 bags of rice.

In Leguan, the target was 1,619 hectares while 1,578 hectares was prepared and sown and 1,304 hectares were harvested with 57,960 bags of paddy. The percentage harvested was 91.8 percent, with a yield of 2.8 tonnes per hectare and 44.4 bags per hectare. This is equivalent to 2,393 bags of rice.

Hogg Island harvested 4,460 bags of paddy from 121 hectares that were prepared and sown. The percentage harvested was 98.3 percent, with a yield of three tonnes per hectare and 39.6 bags per hectare.

Along West Demerara, a total of 374,490 bags of paddy were harvested from 5,615 hectares of land. The target was 5,870 hectares while 5,668 hectares was prepared and sown. A total of 503,890 bags of paddy were harvested from this Region. The percentage harvested was 97.9 per cent with 3.9 tonnes per hectare and 61.7 bags per hectare. This is equivalent to 15,462 with a total production from the Region recorded at 20,805 bags of rice.

In Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica), Cane Grove/Biaboo harvested 200,400 bags of paddy from 2,704 hectares. The target was 2,769 hectares while 2,706 hectares were prepared and sown. The percentage harvested in the Region was 98.2 percent with 4.7 tonnes per hectare and 74.1 bags per hectare, equivalent to 8,423 bags of rice.

For Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice), a total of 1,655,100 bags of paddy were harvested, with 729,000 bags harvested in Mahaica/Abary from 10,931 hectares. The percentage harvested was 98.5 percent, with 4.2 tonnes per hectare and 66.7 bags per hectare. This is equivalent to 30,155 bags of rice.

Approximately 926,100 bags were harvested in West Berbice from 13,887 hectares. The percentage harvested in the area was 93.2 percent with 4.2 tonnes per hectare and 66.7 bags per hectare.

In Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), approximately 508,650 bags of paddy were harvested at the Frontlands from 7,223 hectares. The percentage harvested was 97.2 percent with 4.5 tonnes per hectare and 70.4 bags per hectare that would be equivalent to 21,214 bags of rice.

In Black Bush Polder 397,275 bags were harvested from 6,227 hectares of land. The percentage harvested in the Region was 94.7 percent with 4.1 tonnes per hectare and 63.6 bags per hectare. This is equivalent to 17,285 bags of rice with the Region producing a total of 38,499 bags of rice. (GINA)
