Guyana has received 54,000 visitors for the first half of the year and Tourism Minister Manzoor Nadir has projected that the 1994 record of 112,000 visitors will be surpassed in 2004.

This was announced yesterday by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon, who said the Minister attributed the rise in arrivals to the improved security situation in Guyana.

He stated that the record for arrivals in March and May were broken this year.

Dr. Luncheon said tour operators have, in general, reported a growth in their businesses, which were clearly associated with the arrivals.

The operators also reported that they have heavy bookings for the rest of the year. The Cabinet Secretary said it is recognised that an aggressive marketing campaign is needed to sustain growth in the tourism sector.

He said the operators have accepted the responsibility of making individual contributions to place Guyana firmly on the map as a tourism destination.
