The government has earmarked the Berbice river as the site for the location of a deep-water harbour, says Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon.

Luncheon told Stabroek Business that the port would have to be a private sector financed activity but the current level of economic activity does not make the harbour a sound investment decision at the moment.

He says that having an all-weather road to Brazil will also be necessary for the investment in the harbour to make any sense.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has agreed to finance a pre-feasibility study for the Roraima Integration Project which includes a laterite road to Brazil.

Luncheon's statements were made a day after he confirmed that the government is moving to have a floating bridge constructed across the Berbice river and he says one of the reasons for this is the siting of a deep water harbour in the area. That river already has a trans-shipment facility in the mouth of the river to facilitate the export of bauxite.
