Kishan Bacchus and General Contractors Inc. was on Wednesday awarded the $134M contract to undertake rehabilitation works on the sewerage system at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri and it should be completed in about five months.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the works entail construction of manholes; installation of new sewer lines; flushing existing sewer lines; and the construction of a waste holding tank for wastewater from aircraft. A six-month defects liability period is to follow immediately after.

This award follows one given to a Florida, USA company, UEM Inc. to design and construct an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)-funded US$365,127 sewage treatment plant at the CJIA, Timehri.

That contract involves construction of a steel and concrete double cylindrical sewage treatment plant with a design capacity of 348 cubic metres per day.

Both projects are being undertaken as part of the Government of Guyana/IDB Air Transport Reform Programme.

Meanwhile Bacchus' firm is also contracted to rehabilitate the arrivals area at the CJIA under a joint Government of Guyana/IDB-funded project worth some $231M.

Features to be added as part of an expanded arrivals area include cambio facilities, duty-free shops, and luggage storage. These will be offered in addition to those already in place including postal and airport office facilities, customs and immigration and health post.

Engineering Consultants Vikab International will oversee the sewerage rehabilitation project and also serve as consultants during the construction phase of the sewage treatment plant.
