Athens Olympics qualifier Aliann Pompey is responding well to treatment for the injuries she sustained in a motor vehicle accident over a week ago.
According to Pompey, Friday was her last day of daily treatment/therapy and she will see her doctor Mr Spiradellis tomorrow.
Pompey said after tomorrow, she will see him every other day until she leaves for Athens.
Pompey said the doctor is very pleased with her progress, and so are she and her coach. "For the past two days I was able to get a lot of work done. Progress is excellent. I think this could be a mind-over-matter situation and I've decided what I need to do to get back and will do so regardless of pain," the Commonwealth Games gold medallist said, adding "Besides, pain is temporary, right?"
She said Spiradellis does not think it is at a stage where she has to sit out practice. "He says I can do as much as I want or need to, it will hurt, but it won't do any further damage."
Pompey said her coach Joe Ryan has planned some modelling work-outs for the next week. "These work outs will try to mimic the games but I don't seem to have lost too much, so he wants to go ahead as planned, with a bit of leeway in case of any possible setbacks," the national 200- and 400-metre record holder stated.
Pompey was on her way back to New York from Greece when the shuttle bus she was travelling in near Gatwick Airport, London, collided with a car. She and two British athletes sustained injuries and had to be taken to hospital. Pompey suffered bruised ribs and muscles. (Michael DaSilva)
