Tourist arrivals are sharply up from last year, by some 31%, and Guyana is well on course for a record number of arrivals in 2004.
Already for this year, 85,203 visitors have touched down, with August (13,936) following on from a very strong July count of 17,501, as compared to 10,829 in July 2003. Tour operators have confirmed stronger demand for resorts and interior flights with overseas Guyanese, mainly form the US, leading the way, apparently reassured by less crime and political volatility. Arrivals for Easter (April-13,117) were up by 37.5% from last year and Mashramami (February- 8,307) were up by 33.3%.
At the current rate and with a strong Christmas, arrivals could reach well over 120,000.
