Guyana's Nicolette Fernandes sprang a surprise on the world's number eight ranked women's squash player Jenny Duncalf of England at the Women's World Open Squash Championships in Belfast, Ireland.
Competing for the first time in the prestigious tournament Fernandes recorded her best victory ever, avenging an earlier defeat to the same player in a WISPA tournament in Hong Kong in October with a 9/4, 9/4, 10/9 win.
Fernandes had earlier stormed past Lucie Fialova (Czechoslovakia) and Margiet Huisman (the Netherlands) in her two matches in the qualifying rounds.
She then proceeded to the first round of the main draw when she came up against Duncalf and turned the tables on the English star.
Fernandes, however, lost in the second round to number 13 ranked Laura Lengthorn of England. Fernandes is currently ranked number 34 in the world moving up one place in the latest rankings issued.
