Kean Andrews was well known as a basketball player, but just after the beauty entered the pageant arena in July this year, she definitely changed the views of all who felt she was just a tomboy.

Kean was the fourth runner-up at the Miss Guyana World pageant and she has just returned from Europe after competing against 25 girls aged 15 to 25 years old in the Miss Europe Junior-open pageant held in the Czech Republic. The 6ft 2 inches beauty made it to the final nine at the October 14 pageant, which was held at Tipsport Arena, Liberec.

However, 20-year-old Slovak Nikoleta Kosova was crowned Miss Europe Junior-open, Bulgarian Galina Demireva was first runner-up and Russian Marina Noskova second runner-up.

The beauty spent 14 days in the Czech Republic and said she has learnt a lot and that she enjoyed herself despite the language barrier.

Designer Derek Moore did her wardrobe for the pageant while the Miss Europe organization funded tickets and accommodations in country.

In a recent interview with The Scene, Kean said she began modelling at the Miss Guyana World pageant. According to the 18-year-old, her mother, Carol Andrews and designer Derek Moore motivated her to begin modelling since they felt that she had that quality. "My mother is always telling me that I am beautiful and people should see me," Kean said.

Kean confessed that she was never the type who was into modelling and wearing dresses but she is liking it more as the days go by.

When she entered the Miss Guyana World pageant, Kean was known as a 'freshie', since she had to learn everything including how to walk and pose. Nevertheless, she managed to win the Miss Photogenic and the Miss Internet prizes. When asked about the response she gets from her fans, Kean said everyone seems to be pleased with what she does.

And far from being a 'freshie', Kean is now saying, "modelling is fun, it has its ups and down and I am working along quite well. I am now wearing more dresses and make up."

According to her, she is now preparing to leave Guyana to represent Guyana at the Face of the Universe pageant to be held in Ghana on December 1.

"I will try to do my best, better than the last pageant with hopes of winning the crown," Kean said.

Within the next five years, Kean sees herself attending the University of Guyana to get her degree in Agriculture. She said she was supposed to commence classes at CPCE last September but was unable to do so. However, next September, she will begin classes at the teacher's college since she wants to become an agronomist and she would be starting by teaching Agriculture since she enjoys teaching.

The multi-faceted young lady is also a certified cosmetologist having been trained by Hair Tec International.

Kean who always has a smile on her face said she still plays basketball. She played for Pepsi Sonics, but has now gone over to the Courts Pacesetters team. Kean has been playing basketball for five years now but she has been around it all of her life since her father Eon Andrews was also a basketball player.

She began dancing while at North Georgetown Secondary School and then went to the National School of Dance for a year before joining the X-Factor Dance Troupe, where she is still a member.

The Kitty resident thinks that local modelling should improve within the next five years. "Guyana has a lot of beautiful girls" she said. According to her, the girls are on track and she believes that a lot is been done to train them to represent Guyana at pageants. "It's only left up to the persons themselves to push Guyana."

This nature, sport and adventure-loving female, apart from dancing and playing basketball, also enjoys gardening and plants mostly floral plants.

When she has any free time, Kean hangs out at Dairy Bar on Friday nights since she thinks it's fun and relaxing. But on Saturday night, you can find her at Quik Serv on Sheriff Street.

The teenager now models for various designers including Moore, Michelle Cole and Olympia Small. She sometimes models for Clairan's Boutique's In Style show.

Her advice to other young women is "live each day to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow will bring". afeefah_stuart@yahoo.com
